2012-13 Mandatory Uniform Policy

Our Vision – Why?

West Hills STEM Academy has a mandatory uniform policy. A school uniform helps promote pride and professionalism and reminds all that our primary focus is on academics. The quality of work students produce at school is affected by their personal appearance.

Our Story – How did we get here?

In 2011 our school re-opened as West Hills STEM Academy. We experimented during the 2011-2012 school year with an optional dress code, including an emphasis on Wednesdays and Fridays. Based on feedback from families, staff, and students; it became clear that we needed to either go with a mandatory uniform policy or forgo the optional dress code.

A survey was sent to families, and a clear preference for a mandatory uniform policy emerged. In the spring, a committee of families and staff was formed. There were two family members for every staff member. This committee reviewed research and best practices, researched other uniform policies in public school in the state of Washington, and created a policy that best meets the needs and supports our mission regarding students and learning.

*The Mandatory Uniform Policy will be effective September 2012 and is in alignment and compliance with Bremerton School District Policy 3224. A Uniform Task Force consisting of both families and staff will meet annually to review policy and procedures.
