Welcome to First Grade
We are looking forward to an exciting, learning filled year. Your child will be working on a variety of new skills this year. The reading focus will be reading to gain meaning across content areas, using a variety of texts. Reading fluency is a big part of the first grade reading experience. Your child will periodically bring home materials to help practice these skills.
In math, there will be an emphasis on building strategies for problem solving and the skills to successfully solve problems. We will continue to use the FOSS science kits. Our first kit will be solids and liquids, followed by air and weather, ending with a fun unit on insects. A new component to our curriculum this year, is a unit from Engineering is Elementary. This is part of our buildings STEM focus.
