West Hills Helps Build Local Memorial Site for Friends and Families of 9/11Superintendent, Flip Herndon visited with students as they worked on tiles for the memorial site being developed.
Marlene Lancaster's fifth grade class was selected to participate in this memorable project. The Central Kitsap Fire Department was awarded a piece if a steel beam from the World Trade Center. These are very special relics given by the Friends and Families of 9/11. One of the requirements for receiving one is there must be an educational part involved in the creation of the memorial site. Leadership Kitsap was selected to direct this part of the project. Under the direction if Dr. Sandra Cross of Western Washington University and Corinne Beach, a nuclear engineer at PSNS, one class from each school district was chosen to design and paint a ceramic tile. These tiles are to be used in the creation of the memorial site where the beam will be displayed. The beam will arrive at the Kitsap Mall in late August. The location of the site for the memorial has not been finalized. It is scheduled to be completed in September 2011.
"We were only 2 or 3 years old on that fateful day in history. So when we began this project we first had to discuss the history of 9/11. We did not focus on the death and the destruction or on religion or blame. What we did focus on was how this horrific event in American History brought out the very best in the American people. The heroes of 9/11 are many. With reverence and care we all created a tile to be used in the construction of a memorial to honor these heroes. It is our intention that these heroes, ordinary people who did extraordinary things, are never forgotten."
Every year the same thing happens. West Hills Kindergarten Teachers Stephanie Tubberville, Emily Thatcher and Rhiannon Ennon (long term sub for regular Desiree Hall) came to school one morning and during their reading lessons they realize that the letter X is missing from their classrooms. The students search high (Principals office) and low (the playground) they ask everyone they see in the halls; DO YOU KNOW WHERE OUR X IS? This year the West Hills office decided that more help was needed to find the missing X, so we called the Sheriff’s office. On Monday May 3, 2010, Kitsap County Sheriff Steve Boyer, Deputy Scott Wilson, K-9 Deputy Joe Hedstrom and K-9 Ajax came to West Hills to help the Kindergarten Team in their search for the missing X. After an introduction, the classes dismissed to the Kindergarten playground, and K-9 Ajax was sent out for the search. Ajax locked onto a scent and quick as a flash the missing X were found and returned to the teachers and the students.
Many, many thanks to Sheriff Boyer and the KC Sheriff’s office for their help in finding our missing X.
On Tuesday, March 16, 2010, Mr. Andie Mackie, known as the "Harmonica Man" will visit West Hills! Mr. Mackie will give every student a free harmonica and work with each classroom for about 30 minutes to teach student to play. Sounds of fun and learning! This is made possible by a donation from Rebekah Lodge #168.
AmeriCorps volunteer teams from West Hills and Armin Jahr have been working with a group of students to plan a service project on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The students planted a garden on school grounds at West Hills Elementary. Local businesses, Bremerton City Nursery, Cooleen Gardens, Clear Creek Nursery, and Target in Silverdale have supported this project with generous donations of plants and tools! Enjoy our Photo Album
We are proud of the fact that West Hills Elementary School has earned the reputation of presenting a high academic program. The staff is committed to high standards in learning as well as providing a safe, nurturing environment. Over the past several years our students have demonstrated mastery in reading, mathematics, and writing as compared to other schools with similar demographics. This coming year we are continuing to build a strong science and math emphasis to help students realize in their future a possibility of a career in these areas.
We are able to achieve strong academic results for several reasons:
Our challenges are to reduce our unexcused absences and discipline referrals. We are addressing these two areas by building a climate of safety, respect, and responsibility. We know that our students will flourish in a school that has these characteristics. We would like to welcome anyone who might be interested in becoming a tutor. Please call or visit our school.
